The name "Ounjeong" seems to have been derived from "Oungak," a structure originally located in the rear garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace during the reign of King Gojong.
"Oun," which means "five-colored clouds," symbolizes the realm of the gods. It is believed that the name was given in reference to the scenery, which is reminiscent of where gods may dwell, enveloped in these five-colored clouds.
Ounjeong was formerly located where the Presidential Residence stands but was relocated to its present site in 1989 during new construction.
The pavilion is a perfect square with a hip-and-gable roof and measures approximately 3 meters long and 3 meters wide. The floor inside is wooden, and the ceiling is decorated with five colors. The exterior also has colorful decorative paintings. It was designated a tangible cultural property of Seoul in December 1997 and has been under management ever since.
