On April 7, 2019, President Moon Jae-in planted a Camellia tree in front of Sangchunjae. The tree, 20 years old at the time, was brought from Wando in Jeollanamdo Province.
A member of the tea plant family, the Camellia thrives in Korea's warm southwestern coastal regions and blooms in winter, hence its name, 'winter red' in Korean.
The Camellia produces abundant nectar stored at the base of its long floral tube, attracting Japanese robins to aid in pollination.
Unlike most flowers that wither on the branch, the entire Camellia blossom falls off intact, retaining its bright red petals.
