In 2010, mid-term into his presidency, President Lee Myung-bak planted a Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon) in Sojeongwon Garden on Arbor Day. The tree, 25 years old at planting, has now reached a mature age, given the relatively short lifespan of the Mugunghwa. It stands out with a rounded shape that exudes maturity and dignity. Unlike the typical multi-stemmed Mugunghwa, this one grows as a single trunk, making it more distinctive. The flower is of the 'Hongdansim' variety, one of the prettier varieties of Mugunghwa.
Within the grounds of Cheong Wa Dae, successive presidents have planted the Mugunghwa, the second most common tree after pine trees. This Mugunghwa, standing alone against the backdrop of Bukaksan Mountain, is particularly beautiful with its neatly shaped umbrella form.
