In 2003, when he assumed office, President Roh Moo-hyun planted a pine tree on Arbor Day at the Presidential Residence's circular driveway. Initially, three pine trees were growing there, planted by President Roh Tae-woo in October 1990 to commemorate the completion of the Presidential Residence, but when one of them died, a vacant spot was created. Although replanting in place of a deceased commemorative tree is not customary, President Roh Moo-hyun, unconcerned with convention, chose a pine tree nearly the same size as the original to plant in its place. This selection process reflects his attitude of not being confined by formality and protocol during his tenure. The tree, which was 80 years old at the time of its planting, is now over 100 years old by current standards.
