In June 2000, to commemorate the first inter-Korean summit in Pyongyang, President Kim Dae-jung planted a 'Hongdansim' Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon) near the stairs leading to Yeongbingwan. He reportedly sought advice from Professor Shim Gyeong-gu, a renowned Mugunghwa specialist from Sungkyunkwan University, and received a donation of the finest Mugunghwa. The extraordinary care in planting a single Rose of Sharon tree likely reflects an intention to demonstrate patriotism through the cultivation of Mugunghwa, symbolizing devotion to the nation.
While there is no specific law designating the Mugunghwa as the national flower, it is a symbol of patriotism, as evidenced by its incorporation into the designs of government and parliamentary symbols.
