In 1988, on Arbor Day and before the new Main Building was constructed, President Roh Tae-woo planted a Korean fir as a memorial tree, wishing for the success of the 24th Seoul Olympics being held that fall. When planted, this tree was 28 years old, making it a 63-year-old mature tree. It is one of the largest and most beautiful Korean firs in Seoul.
The Korean Fir, whose scientific name includes 'Koreana,' is a rare tree found only in Korea.
It typically thrives in cool, windy environments, such as the peaks of Mt. Hallasan and Mt. Jirisan. Although its natural habitats have been reduced, this tree has thrived within Cheong Wa Dae because of the cooler microclimate created after the grand Main Building was erected in 1991. Combined with the dedication and care of the landscaping staff, optimal conditions were cultivated for the tree's growth.
